Bikes Aboard MTA Trains and Buses
NYC Transit Subway
Bicycles are permitted on Subway trains at all times. However,
we strongly recommend that cyclists avoid boarding crowded rush hour trains.
Be courteous to your fellow passengers by standing with your bike, moving it
so others can pass, and not blocking doors. Read all about Subway bike
safety and courtesy.
NYC Transit Bus, MTA Bus and Long Island Bus
Folding bicycles are
permitted aboard local and limited buses at all times. Please fold your bike
before boarding and don’t block the aisle or doors. Folding bikes
are not allowed on express buses. All other bicycles are prohibited.
- Bicycles are allowed aboard LIRR trains at most times outside of rush hours and major holidays. See the Long Island Rail Road bike pages for details.
- A $5 lifetime LIRR Bicycle Permit is required. Permits may be purchased at ticket booths, onboard trains, and by mail.
- On weekdays, a maximum of four bicycles per train is allowed. On weekends, a maximum of eight bicycles per train is allowed. Special weekend “bicycle trains” can accommodate more than eight bicycles; these trains are indicated on the published timetables.
- Folding bicycles are allowed onboard trains at all times and do not require a permit. Please fold your bike before boarding and don’t block the aisle or doors.
- Bicycle event group organizers must contact LIRR Group Travel at 718-558-7498.
Metro-North Railroad
- Bicycles are allowed aboard MNR trains at most times outside of rush hours and major holidays. See the Metro-North Railroad bike pages for details.
- A $5 lifetime MNR Bicycle Permit is required. Permits may be purchased at ticket booths, onboard trains, and by mail.
- On weekdays, a maximum of four bicycles per train is allowed. On weekends, a maximum of eight bicycles per train is allowed. Special weekend “bicycle trains” can accommodate more than eight bicycles; these trains are indicated on the published timetables.
- Folding bicycles are allowed onboard trains at all times and do not require a permit. Please fold your bike before boarding and don’t block the aisle or doors.
- Cyclists traveling together in groups of ten or more must contact Metro-North at 212-499-4398.
Staten Island Railway
- Bicycles are allowed aboard SIR trains at all times except:
- 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, Weekdays, on St. George-bound trains
- 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Weekdays, on Tottenville-bound trains
- Folding bicycles are allowed onboard trains at all times. Please fold your bike before boarding and don’t block the aisle or doors.
- Be courteous to your fellow passengers by standing with your bike, moving it so others can pass.
Bike Parking at MTA Stations
Subway
Bicycle
racks provided by the New York City Department of Transportation are available
near many Subway entrances. Bicycles chained to Subway entrance railings will
be removed and delivered to the Lost Property Unit (212-712-4500), so please lock up your
bike appropriately.
Long Island Rail Road
- Bike racks are available at many LIRR stations. Please see each station's Parking Map for location of the rack.
- Bike lockers managed by Long Island Transportation Management, 877-4COMMUTE (877-426-6688) are available at Bridgehampton, Central Islip, Cold Spring Harbor, Copiague, Farmingdale, Greenlawn, Greenport, Hicksville, Huntington, Massapequa, Northport, Oakdale, Patchogue, Port Jefferson, Ronkonkoma, Sayville, Stony Brook, and Wantagh Stations.
Metro-North Railroad
- Bike racks are available at many Metro-North stations. Please see each station's Parking Map for location of the rack.
- Bike lockers at Cortlandt, Dover Plains, Patterson, Tenmile River, and Wassaic Stations and are managed by Allright Parking, 888-682-7275.
- Bike lockers at Pawling Station are managed by the Village of Pawling, 845-855-1122.
Bikes on MTA Bridges & Tunnels
For safety, bicycles must be walked across the pedestrian walkways of the following bridges:
- Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge
- Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge
- Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (access is available from the walkway to bike paths on Randall's Island.)

There is no bicycle or pedestrian access on the following bridges:
- Bronx-Whitestone Bridge
- Henry Hudson Bridge (bicycle & pedestrian access returns in 2010)
- Throgs Neck Bridge
- Verrazano-Narrows Bridge
Tunnels
There is no bicycle or pedestrian access to the Queens Midtown Tunnel and the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel.
