Responsibilities: This position reports to the Unit Manager. The Unit focuses on timely detection of, and countermeasures to, weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in order to deter attacks or mitigate the aftermath. Responsibilities include: Supporting the administration of NYCT's ~100 member WMD-HazMat Response Team including preparation of unit's budget for equipment and training; maintenance of team's monitoring and personal protective equipment (PPE) as well as the associated databases; responding to suspected WMD-HazMat incidents (HazWOPER training will be required); conducting WMD-HazMat Response Team's training (e.g., to HazWOPER technician level) pertaining to chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) WMD; participating in interagency exercises. Support WMD environmental monitoring programs; reviews of emerging monitoring technology for real-time detection of WMD. Assist in the development of suitable on-site test bed(s) for the evaluation of evolving detection technology. Assist in researching agent-specific decontamination protocols.
Exper. & Educ.: A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus six years of satisfactory, full-time professional safety work acquired while working for the New York City Transit; or A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a specialization in Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Chemical, Biological or Physical Sciences, or a related field, plus at least two years of satisfactory full-time experience in professional safety work; or Education and/or experience equivalent to that listed above. A master's degree in any of the fields indicated above may be substituted for one year of experience. However, all external candidates must have a bachelor's degree and at least one year of experience as described above. Additional experience needed for higher levels. Must be a licensed driver.
Desired Skills: Excellent written and verbal presentation skills. Experience with environmental &/or industrial hygiene monitoring methods. Working knowledge of environmental toxicology (including contaminant fate & transport modeling), epidemiology and infection control practices. Knowledge of global information systems (GIS). Experience as a first responder and/or supervising responses to hazardous materials incidents (e.g., civilian or military experience). Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel and Access.
