Title: Signal Helper

Responsibilities: Signal Helpers assist Signal Maintainers in the installation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of the signal system. They clean, lubricate, and inspect all signal equipment; excavate and backfill the trenches; remove painting and graffiti from all equipment; remove snow during emergency and storm duty; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work. Must be available to work various shifts

Exper. & Educ.: Graduation from a trade school, technical school or vocational high school, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a comparable agency, with a major course of study in electrical, electronic or electromechanical technology and one year of full-time satisfactory experience as a helper in the electrical, electronic, or electromechanical fields. A Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in the State of New York or a learner’s permit for a Class B CDL with no disqualifying restrictions. A Class B CDL permit holder must obtain the Class B CDL license within six months of appointment.

Desired Skills: The ability to read and understand electrical drawings and knowledge of Programmable Logic Computers (PLC).

Responsibilities: Electronic Maintainers, under general supervision, install, maintain, test, troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment that is part of the Staten Island Railway’s infrastructure. They perform work on automatic fare collection equipment, security equipment, closed circuit televisions, access control equipment, public address systems, computer equipment, network equipment, programmable logic controllers, two-way radio communications equipment, telephone systems, fire alarm systems; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Exper. & Educ.: A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and three years of full-time journey-level experience in maintaining, calibrating or, installing one or more of the following types of equipment: Closed circuit televisions, two-way radio communications equipment, fiber optic networks, uninterruptible power supplies, security management systems, or video recording systems; or an Associates Degree in electrical or electronic technology, or a closely related field and two years of experience as described above. License Requirement: A Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) valid in the State of New York; or a Learner’s Permit for a Class B Commercial Driver License valid in the State of New York. Responsibilities: Investigating and resolving S/W issues regarding the subway car fleet. Propose S/W solutions modify source code and documentation. Developing & implementing test plans to verify/validate operation of modified S/W both on the subway car and on the Bench Test Equipment. Installing OEM and in-house developed S/W upgrades on the subway car equipment & Portable Test Equipment. Provide maintenance overhaul shop & interdepartmental support to resolve car & PTE issues. The incumbent will also be maintaining, S/W tracking modifications and S/W configuration. Provide expertise for new car contract H/W & S/W issues. Evaluate S/W development platforms to replace obsolete systems.

Exper. & Educ.: {1}. A four-year high school diploma or its equivalent, plus: (a) 2 yrs. of full time satisfactory experience as a fully trained mechanic performing one of the following: (i) Specialized work reviewing the design of railcars of moderate complexity; or (ii) Supervising & inspecting the installation of railcars; or (iii) Preparing plans & technical specifications for railcar equipment or subsystems; & (b) 4 yrs. of full time experience as a fully trained mechanic in one or a combination of the following fields: (i) Railroad power-operated railcar engineering & repair; or (ii) Railcar mtce., manufacture or installation supervision; or {2}. Design Tools: ABEL, CUPL, EXACT, LATTICE, MAXPLUS, PALASM, SYNARIO, VISIO & others. Network experience: ISO/OSI model, ECHELON LonWorks & Protocol Analyzers is a plus. Knowledge of electronic systems & software/hardware interfaces. Familiar with IEEE Software Engineering Standards. 3 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
