Select Bus Service

A New Way to Pay: BEFORE you Board

Pay your fare at a fare collection machine at the Select Bus Service bus stop.
There are two types of fare collection machines that accept fares and issue receipts. Pay with MetroCard at the MetroCard Fare Collector or with coins at Coin Fare Collector.

You MUST pay at ONE of these machines and get a proof-of-payment receipt before boarding the bus. Keep your receipt for the duration of your trip.

Fare inspectors randomly check for them. Anyone who cannot produce a valid receipt could be subject to a substantial fine.

Other Important Information

Neither machine sells or refills MetroCard; they are not vending machines, and do not make change.

Receipts cannot be used to board any other bus. They are valid for Select Bus Service only and only on the SBS route for wich was issued.

Your UniTicket or Return-Trip ticket serves as a receipt. Just board the bus. You don't need to get a receipt from the fare collector machines. Your MTA Metro-North Railroad UniTicket or MTA NYC Transit Return-Trip Ticket serves as a receipt. Just show your ticket to a fare inspector upon request.

What to do if you can't obtain a receipt at a fare collection machine or have some other problem:

  • Take down the machine number.
  • If a machine is not working, please board the bus and tell the bus operator.
  • If a machine does not issue a receipt or return your MetroCard or coins, ask the bus operator for a business reply envelope or call 511.
