Track Worker

In Spring 2011 on the 7line icon line, we began critical maintenance and infrastructure work in the 105-year-old Steinway Tunnel, which links Manhattan and Queens and began installing a new signal system known as Communications Based Train Control (CBTC).  We also began station improvement work at Court Sq, Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av and at Hunters Point Av.  Progress is being made, as some work in the tunnel and in the stations has been completed, but substantial work remains.  This means continued 7line icon line service changes for several years.

When completed in late 2016, CBTC will result in more reliable service, more frequent service and countdown clocks and all 7line icon line stations. We know this is an inconvenience and changes the way you travel, but the work is necessary for the modernization and improvement in the line’s reliability.

Work Completed

Court Sq Station was closed for ten weeks between January and April.  During the time the station was closed, we replaced the Manhattan-bound and Flushing-bound platforms and windscreens (platform walls), installed ADA accessible boarding areas, tactile warning strips, and signage.  In addition, new track and platform to mezzanine stairways were installed and the station’s mezzanine and columns on station platforms were painted.

Work Ongoing

Station improvement work at Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av continues and entails replacing platform-edge concrete, installing rubbing boards (edge of platform) and tactile platform-edge warning strips.  Cracked platform surfaces, and walls and ceilings are being repaired and station lighting is being improved.

At Hunters Point Av, work includes the repair of street and platform stairs and replacement of platform rubbing boards, ADA-accessible warning strips and platform-edge boarding areas. The station is also being painted and ceilings, tiled walls, columns, and concrete flooring is being repaired.

Communications Based Train Control installation is progressing with the pulling of signal line cable, installing cable straps and conduits and the chopping and patching of signal locations.  Also taking place is construction work for the signal relay rooms and the demolition of the benchwall (a structure that houses electrical cables and used by employees when walking along the tracks) in the Steinway Tunnel.  A new benchwall, that is safer for employees, will be constructed.
